I visited Amsterdam for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I completely fell in love with the city. The canals lined by narrow cobblestone streets, whirring bicycles, quirky shops and cosy cafes (yes cafés not coffee shops, coffee shops are known to the locals as an alcohol-free establishment where marijuana is sold for 18s and over). The free-spirited culture makes Amsterdam one of Europe’s greatest cities. With so much to offer it can be overwhelming knowing where to start. So here are our top tips to get the most out of your visit to one of my now favourite cities.

Rent a bicycle:
The best way to discover Amsterdam is to rent a bicycle. We cycled everywhere and it allowed us to see so much more whilst blending in with the locals. There is honestly no finer way to explore the city’s neighbourhoods.

Discover Amsterdam’s ‘Nine Streets’
This district is famous for its beautiful cobblestone nine streets, connected by the canals. Here you will find vintage and designer shops, small fashion and interior boutiques and cosy cafes. This area is a must if you want to hang out where the locals do.

Eating out:

  • Mr Porter
I visited Mr porter, a new luxury steakhouse perched on the top floor of the business hotel, The W. The restaurant oozes luxury with its rich golden tones, plush brass and leather.
  • Mama Kelly
Instagram-ready, this restaurant is a girls ultimate dream and certainly one to visit when in the Netherlands (sorry boys).
  • Van Staple
Head here for the best cookies you will ever taste! They come in one flavour and this is all they sell, so you can imagine they are going to be insane.

And there you have it! If it wasn’t before, I hope Amsterdam is at the top of your travel wish list.
